Genki Surf School logo
The genki way

Genki means full of energy.

It's the wobble on your first pop-up. The mouthful of saltwater you laugh off. The paddle-out where nobody's judging your form — because everybody remembers their own.

At Genki, we believe surfing is a journey, not a level. Whether you're catching your first wave, building confidence in the lineup, working on your turns, or looking for your next surf adventure, we're here to help you enjoy the process and keep progressing. With personalized coaching, small groups, video analysis, and surf trips, every session is built around where you are now—and where you want your surfing to go.

Frequently asked
questions.

Do I need any surfing experience?
+
Not at all. Whether it's your first time on a board or you've been surfing for years, we'll adapt the session to your level, goals, and experience. Our coaches focus on helping you enjoy the waves while making real progress.
I'm a complete beginner. Is Genki right for me?
+
Absolutely. We'll start with the fundamentals on the beach before getting into the water, then build your confidence step by step. You don't need to be athletic or already know how to surf—we'll meet you where you are.
I can already surf. Can you help me improve?
+
Yes. Genki is not only for first-timers. For progressing and intermediate surfers, we can focus on technique, positioning, wave selection, turns, take-offs, and other areas of your surfing that you want to develop. Video analysis is also available for a more detailed look at your surfing at additional cost.
What if I'm nervous or not confident in the water?
+
That's completely okay. You're not expected to arrive feeling confident. Your coach will explain everything clearly, stay with you throughout the session, and choose conditions appropriate for your ability. The goal is to help you feel comfortable while having fun—not to push you beyond your limits.
Do I need to be a strong swimmer?
+
You should be comfortable in the water, but you don't need to be an experienced swimmer. For safety, we'll assess your ability and choose the appropriate conditions and session for you. If you're unsure, just tell us before booking.
What does a surf lesson include?
+
Your session includes professional coaching, surfboard and required equipment, a safety and technique briefing, and plenty of time in the water. Depending on the session you choose, you can also add video analysis, photography, or other options.
What's the difference between a group lesson and private coaching?
+
Group sessions are a fun way to learn and surf with others while still receiving personal coaching. Private coaching gives you dedicated attention from your coach and allows the session to be built specifically around your level, goals, and technique.
Can I get my surfing filmed?
+
Yes. Video analysis is available for surfers who want more detailed feedback. We'll review your waves with you and identify specific things you can work on, rather than simply telling you to "surf better."
What happens if the waves aren't suitable?
+
Your safety and the quality of the session come first. Surf conditions change every day, so your coach will choose the most suitable location and conditions based on your ability. If conditions are genuinely unsuitable for a safe and worthwhile session, we'll work with you to reschedule or find the best alternative.
Can I book multiple days?
+
Definitely. Multiple sessions are one of the best ways to improve because your coach can build on what you learned previously. We can also create a progression plan for your stay, from fundamentals to more advanced technique.
Do you offer surf trips outside Bali?
+
Yes. Genki also offers surf trips for surfers who want to explore new waves and destinations beyond their usual spot. Trips can be tailored to your experience, goals, and the type of waves you want to surf.
What should I bring?
+
Bring swimwear, sunscreen, a towel, drinking water, and a positive attitude. We'll provide the surf equipment you need for your session.
What happens if I'm not sure which session to book?
+
No problem. Tell us your surfing experience, what you'd like to improve, and how comfortable you are in the water. We'll recommend the session that makes the most sense for you.
Can I book if I'm travelling alone?
+
Of course. Many surfers come to Bali solo. You can join a group session and meet other surfers, or choose private coaching if you prefer a more personalized experience.
How far in advance should I book?
+
We recommend booking ahead when possible, especially during busy periods. However, if you're already in Bali and want to surf today or tomorrow, send us a message and we'll check availability.
What if I have to cancel or change my booking?
+
We understand that travel plans change. Our cancellation and rescheduling policy is designed to keep things flexible while allowing us to plan our coaching sessions properly. Free of charge cancellation up to 12-hr before your session.
